a question about yum update in fedora 7

Hi,
I am very new in linux and I really need some help about updating or installing software. It is a simple question.
Thanks to you beforehand.

I just installed fedora 7 on my laptop and as soon as it is installed I have got a notification that I have 284 important updates available located at the very top right on my screen.
I clicked the notification and fedora 7 started to download and to sort out dependencies.
However, the error occurred saying "Insufficient space in download directory //var/cache/yum/updates/packages to download"

I check my system in terminal typing " df " and it turned out like this
[ivanky@localhost ~]$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda6 3968092 3401744 361524 91% /
/dev/sda3 194449 11523 172886 7% /boot
tmpfs 192108 0 192108 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda5 4956284 1353032 3347420 29% /home

I have a windows in my laptop as well.
So I googled the term "Insufficient space in download directory //var/cache/yum/updates/packages to download" and someone had the same problem when he tried to do yum update in a terminal.
The solution is to create another partition with space. So I did these:

For example if mounted partition /u has sufficient room,

cd /var/cache
find yum -print|cpio -pdmv /u
rm -rf yum
ln -s /u/yum yum

and it worked. And now I will install/update/remove softwares using a command window. I follow yum configuration from http://www.fedorafaq.org/

So I can update my system using a terminal but I cannot update using a GUI since (I think) it still downloaded files to /var/cache/yum/updates/packages directory which is out of space.

My questions are:
1. Can I remove files or updates that have been downloaded to this old directory (/var/cache/yum/updates/packages) or to the new link directory (/u/yum/updates/packages) ?
2. Can I assign the GUI (pirut) to download updates not to the old directory but to the new one?

Thanks you so much.
Ivanky

Your tiny root partition is as good as full. Think of some way to resize/clean it as well

1. move it

Thanks Amani,
Yes I know my root partition is so small, however,
even if I have some big or sufficient space in my root partition,
at some stage it will get full, won't it?
So, I wanna ask whether those updates can be removed, after the updating process is completed.
Actually I have not tried to remove this, so I am sorry. I know if you never try you do not know.

Thanks beforehand

By default, yum deletes the .rpm files as the last step in the update procedure. You can over-ride this, but you need a plug-in to do so.

Warning: Fedora 7 is no longer supported, and no bug fixes to it will be in the repositories for problems found after, IIRC, 2007 or so.

Thanks a lot four your information, PTrenholme

Yes I just realized that now Fedora 7 is no longer updated.
I am so close to not use windows anymore and to remove my big windows partition on my laptop, once I understand (at least) to install software, and to add plug-ins on my fedora and firefox.

regards,
