Arrow a few basic questions

Save Desktop? - My desktop 'hd/mount' icons - do not stay where I put them. I have used the session panel to 'remember' AND entered gnome-sesson-save from the terminal... but a reboot often shows these icons is new positions - with empty spaces between the icons. How can I force the desktop icon positions to be saved.

How to Troubleshoot? - I have a few applications, which I launch via panel icon, that have worked in the past - but now nothing happens when I try to launch them. How do I troubleshoot this? I have looked in the sytem log-messages area but not found anything.

Application Updates? - Are applications updated automatically? For example - I have GIMP 2.4.5 installed. gimp.org shows 2.4.6 was released 5-30-08. When will this version show up in the default FC9 repositories - and should I wait for that? If I wait - will it automatically be updated?

Supported Version? - The Supported Versions Sticky does not include Fedora 9. Any elaboration on what this means?

Thanks!

First, see if the application will run from a terminal. If so, you may simply need to set the right pathname in the panel shortcut.

I would think that there would be no automatic updates unless you configured it specifically. Most distros either do nothing or they tell you that updates are available. Also, don't expect the distro repositories to be always up to date. they all have different polices. One exception is Arch--they always seem to have the very latest.

Thanks for the reply.
re Application Updates - is there a tool that will check you application(s) to see if they are the latest version?

The typical package manager will show you what is available from the distro maintainer and what you have installed.
To see the latest you can go to the project website---also the common apps are listed in the distro descriptions at distrowatch.
