2.6.12-1.1398_FC4-i686 compile error

I am trying to recompile my kernel 2.6.12-1.1398_FC4-i686 and have a problem. I am using Fedora Core 4 on an i686. When I go into the source directory and try either make mrproper or make clean, I get the following error.

fs/hostfs/Makefile:11: arch/um/scripts/Makefile.rules: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `arch/um/scripts/Makefile.rules'. Stop.
make[1]: *** [fs/hostfs] Error 2
make: *** [_clean_fs] Error 2

The source directory was installed using yum so I can't understand why arch/um/scripts/Makefile.rules is not there.

Any suggestions?

I got that problem too.
I guess you should try downloading the source tarball(linux2.6.11) from http://www.kernel.org, because the kernel-devel package installed by yum is incomplete. You can also download the kernel SRPM(not included with the installation CD) from redhat if you want to use its patches.
But I happened to see(unsure?) that the kernel won't be built under gcc4(which is installed with FC4), and I have tried many ways to build the kernel(mainly to include a ntfs module), and haven't succeeded anymore. Maybe we should choose FC3 or some other distro because FC4 is too new to our newbies.
