Hello helpfull guru's....

I am still trying to totally migrate from windows to linux, which is succeeding better then i thought it would, except for a few things, one of those things kind of has priority for me :D

My girlfriend is in Sweden for 6 months for her school (yes, therefore the time for the migration) and we want to communicate via webcam like we do in windows using MSN.

Is there a program that supports chat including video and sound stream over ip?

ps. i have heard of gaim-vv, which is still in its fetal stage as i understand, if this is the best option please tell me.

Ayttm supports cams under Yahoo Messenger. I've never
tried it with any other protocols. ayttm

I've tried several things, but the only one that did work is gaim-vv. It's hard to make it compile though. It is supposed that amsn is going to include audio/video soon, also gaim-vv is going to move to gstreamer which is going to make things easier. But if you're in a hurry and want to use MSN now, well, gaim-vv is your only choice. If you're willing to use yahoo for instance, Gyach-E is working fine. Remember that you can allways go back to reliable programs as Gnomemeeting (having a direct connection is allways better that using one of hotmail servers).

i installed a webcam under suse 9.1. works fine now after some initial trouble with compiling the right driver for it. it won't run though now under Gyach Enhanced. apparently this is because gyach E doesn't support video4linux 2, but only 1. ayttm crashes when i invite my girlfriend to my cam (yes i am in a kind of similar situation :P)
the only program for conferencing/chat that i got to work with the camera so far is gnomemeeting (detected it straight away), but i can''t get that to connect with anyone's netmeeting so far. as bringing all of my friends over from the 'Dark Side' will be too much trouble, i'd like to get gnomemeeting connected. what should i look for?

Send what is exactly the problem that you're experiencing with Gnomemeeting. If you can log into a directory then you shouldn't have problems. Of course your friends under windows won't be able to see you, but you should be able to contact them. The basic information you should send is

1) can you log into an internet directory and see other gnomemeeting fellows?

2) If you get your friends IP (by some other chat for example) and you call them directly, can you establish a connection?

3) Did you try first shutting iptables?

Another thing I'd like to know is wich webcam did you install, if by anychance is a logitech quick messenger I'd love to know wich drivers you found.

thanks. i got gnomemeeting running now. it only gives a stable connection for about 3.30 so far though, regardless of the fact ip tables are running or not. it may depend on connection to the guy i tested it with though..

i have a philips ToUcam ii pcvc820k

it runs with the omnivision (ov511) driver, available at http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/
standard kernel ov511 doesnt work for it. i downloaded v2.27
also make sure you read the instructions that come with the driver. both the ovcamchip and ov511 drivers must be loaded for the cam to work
