Love Feather and still exploring all the potentials.
Wonder what will 2.6.7 do? Can we use option to boot into 2.6.5, instead of 2.4.26?
Recently download Austrumi 0.8.7(Suse 8.2 based) with 2.6.7 kernel adaptation. This kernel caches all the distro into the 96 mb dram limitation. The cdrom opens to allow the liveOS(cd) to be taken out, after it cached. All of 50 mb of operating system software. But slackware shows it age in software packaged with it(telnet/ssh). Not for dialup modems.
Anyway, 2.6.x is LiveOS without virtual memory, just pile all the software into your drams.

2.6 isn't supported on all systems yet, and is far less stable than 2.4, so I decided to stick with 2.4.26 for Feather.
You can load Feather into RAM too (boot with "knoppix toram"), but this isn't automatic as Feather runs on many older systems.

Knoppix toram on the full blown release, puts the 740 mb cdrom ISO in the hdd. Then swap from hdd to dram. It is faster than swapping from cdrom, that way.
But using 256 mb dram, did not use any swapping from cdrom to dram. I assume no swap will happen from hdd either, if 256 mb of dram is installed.
Unfortunately, some real old computer using simms, can not support 256 mb of dram.
Austrumi is stable with 2.6.7. It doen't have many(or enough) programs included to have much dependency problems. Only supports cable modem or ADSL.
Knoppix 2.4.26(mosix for load balancing) is also stable and is the same as 2.6.7 caching the programs in dram, if you have 256 mb of dynamic memory.
Comparison is both are competitive.

wow! guyz feather 0.5.8 is pretty quick in loading up compared to 0.5.7 that i was using previously it also had too many bugs like wmwifi when it was clicked to load it would load and kill itself so ye pretty good fixes they have had.... btw guyz if u have any bugs just report to their forums or email them so they can keep making this awesum distro as less bug free as they can
other than that enjoy feather!!

new to feather
Hi. I just got feather to install on my old pentium mmx laptop (166mhz). It runs beautifully from the live cd and completes the install process when I chose to install it to HD.
BUT I CANT LOG IN!
How does one login to see that desktop once it is installed on the HD? I always set my password as x. What is the username for the desktop? Seriously, I know this is probably a dumb question with an obvious answer, but I can't figure it out! Is it "user" or "root" or something like that?

Feather on Dell Latitude won't boot from HD!
I have an old Dell Latitude model CP M233XT that I've been trying to get a Linux distro to work on. ANY Linux distro... Half of the small distros break on the unit's graphics card, the rest lock up partway into loading the live CD version. Only Feather boots from the CD properly - and even then, you have to select 'xbdev' on boot to get a display.
I tried:
Puppy 1.07
Puppy 2.17
Puppy 3.01
Damn Small Linux
Beatrix
Ubuntu
Knoppix
Feather
Once I got Feather to display from CD, I did a HD install, using the included root terminal and typing 'knoppix-installer'. The install seemed to work, but when I try and boot from HD, I get the LILO splash screen, and a prompt that Linux sees the BIOS OK. Then there's some more HD action, but no boot.
The computer has 128 MB of ram, 10 Gb HD, and a 233 MHz CPU, so it's well inside the range of what should work with Feather. It also had a fully functional Win 2K install on it, so I don't think this is a hardware issue like a bad HD.
This unit is a prototype - I'm working with a used computer reseller here in NYC to try and develop a line of Linux wireless laptops. We're trying to standardize on one distro and one wireless card. Preliminary tests show that the D-Link PCMCIA card model WNA-1330 should suit our needs.
Can someone help me get this turkey to fly?
Thanks!
