Can you please inform me if this is the right place for help.
I installed disk 1 and then found I had to use the mouse which stuck. On the back of my Windows PC I went to remove the mouse cable and moved the power cable so the PC restarted.
HDD-0 is my Windows XP drive, I put in a new HDD, HDD-1 to instasll LINUX.
But as a result part of the kernel was installed on HDD-0 and Windows detected it during an update but I couldn't find the Windows CD to continue repair. The Linux disc always tries to boot from the kernel. If I put the windows CD in how do I proceed removing the kernel and then proceed installationn on HDD-1.
I would appreciate help solving this problem.

Wonder if Feather Linux would benefit to have ttys20 driver for Pctel v0.92 winmodem? Intel dotstation kde3.04 has it. Puppy Linux has ttyLT0 Lucent dsp winmodem driver.
One sound chip and cpu host is much cheaper and runs faster than dsp and data pump design.

for original modem chipset, Pctel manufactured 789T.
Later, the chipset has been cmi 8738.
Since it is a sound chip based on pcm codes, the tighter firmware is one file to make it a modem. Then the serial port setup is the regular modem driver.
For 2.6.x driver, it has to be written differently. The interface is ppp(dialer application program). It is the socket to plug in the firmware(any chipset) and universal serial port modem driver. Firmware is plug in by the PNP number.
You will find the Pctel drivers for 2.4.x different from the ones for earlier 2.2.x kernels.

Unfortunately, the driver is about 1Mb when compiled, so there's not much chance of it being included in Feather. However, it's of course possible to install it when you've got Feather on your hard drive.

Maybe it could be downloaded into a floppy, like other personal data?

That would be possible, but if so then surely the user may as well compile it him/herself?

Knoppix may do it, eventually. I have done the old 2.4.x pctel drivers.
I don't know if Feather has apt-get or not, to simplify things? Otherwise can tar it? And drag and drop in the floppy?

Feather has apt-get, it's just downloaded from the internet before you can use it. And yes - that would work (the floppy idea).

Do I need to alias the pctel driver as /dev/modem?
And can I install it during boot along with all the personal stuff save in the original setup?
I love liveOS, and avoid virtual memory to speed up slower older computers.

You should be able to simply modprobe the modem driver and then use the normal modem setup - I'm not an expert though, as I've never used it.
You can load it during boot by creating a .tar.gz with the driver in, and a file /home/knoppix/localscript.sh with your commands that you want to run in - see "Building Custom Packages" in the Docs -> Local menu of Feather 0.5.5 for details.

I am using full blown Knoppix 3.4 with floppy disk on personal data setup. Using the same computer for DSL and Feather.
I am looking at DSL and Feather to see what compatibility has been removed by the small foot print. Both did poorly with agp video card. But the lack of drivers incuded, actually helped to install operating system without conflicting with PnP devices(which did not get recognised). So much for hardware compatibility. F2 cheat codes were not much help to run minimized Knoppix. Is there any unpublished cheat codes?
Does 256 mb ramdisk help to run cdrom for music cd or vcd movies, using a single cdrom?
These are questions that one asks as we delve more into the capability of a condensed operating system.
I have just started to look at Puppy Linux(based on Mandrake 9.2), which has Fvwm95 desktop. Very pleasant screen(seagull) background. It has mozilla(firefox), and ttyLTO winmodem drivers. There maybe more hidden bugs, yet. Not as stable as Knoppix, but handles AGP monitor well at about 50 mb foot print.
More questions on Feather later.
