How to write docs & use dialup in Feather!
If it is clear & easy people will use it otherwise they will not.
Everything needs to be specific if you want new users. Here is how I got
dialup working in Feather after the hopefully revised by now documentation said
"open System Configuration." When I looked there wasn't any such thing. But
the following worked.
R Click on Desktop>Apps>System>PPP configuration tool> be sure to backspace
when it says replace. Otherwise answer the questions like any normal setup.
I can see all the correct answers for what I do in Knoppix except Knoppix
has Pap/Chap and this only lets me use PAP.
The hopefully now revised document then said use pon scripts. So I did
R Click on Desktop>Apps>Net>PPP>Pon or Poff and the modem gives a tone but
doesn't dial then I hear, "If you would like to make a call, hangup and
try again...."
I Repeated the last step many times without any success.
I thought
The modem is a Hayes Optima 336 so it should be easy and Hayes compatible.
Finally, I logged on as Root and gave the CLI "pon MyProvider" and the modem
started dialing. It only took a few hours of wasted time. Many times I
have wasted hours or days because some Linux guru assumed that everybody
that boots their CD already knows all of the packages in Linux so they
don't bother with documentation like R Click on Desktop>Apps>System>PPP
configuration...? Then we wonder why normal people still use the
inferior product that has step by step documentation in the product and
all over the Internet!
