Get Rid of XP and Install Feather Live CD to Hard Drive?

I have a Toshiba Techra8100 with Windows XP that crashed when I tried to update to SP3. I just get a configsys missing error. I want to dump XP on this computer and install Feather (it's an old computer). I have Feather on a live CD and it seems to run fine at startup. How do I wipe out XP and load Feather onto the hard drive to boot without the CD?

I'm not familiar with Feather, but, it should have an Install to Hard Drive option somewhere. Find it, go through the installer, and -- if you really want to wipe XP -- when you get to the partitioning step, tell Feather to take the entire hard drive for itself.

I can help with that
but are you sure you want Feather?
its a great distro, but also quite dead...

and what's the specs of your lappy?
ram, hdd size, etc

I've gotten the XP system off the hard drive (says no operating system when I turn it on without the Feather CD in the drive).

Trying to use the Install to the Hard Drive from 'Enhancements' menu. Did a partition (hda1?) but it only seems to have 1 MB of space and I can't figure out how to make it larger. Set it up as a Linux swap Type. After exiting cfdisk program, I get a popup that says "Do you want to use a swap partition?". When I select Yes, I get a menu asking me to select the partition (there's only one - hda1), which I pick. Then I get an error that it's less than 16MB, script terminated.

My system has a 12 gig hard drive and 256MB (system status says 320856kb?) What distribution do you recommend if not Feather? I need a live CD to load it from, since I have wiped out the OS.

whats your experience in linux?

have you tried a ubuntu derivative?

"How do I wipe out XP . . ."

Go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/syst...sysresccd-x86/ download SystemRescueCD 1.3.4; burn iso to CD; boot to CD and type "dban" at first prompt to appear (on bottom of screen); after screen changes to light blue color, another prompt will appear -- at this, type "autonuke." Wait for HDD to be filled completely with zeros; screen will go black with a couple lines at top saying to remove CD and power off computer. But keep CD in and reboot.

At same first prompt as above, hit F2, choose default to type if no problems arise; after load-up of program, another prompt will present itself -- at this, type "startx;" in the yellow terminal, type "gparted" and partition as desired.

From the CLI, to burn an ISO :
PHP Code:

wodim -sao speed=4 name.iso

should work

I would give the following distro a try --

Linus,

I went to the NFluxOS download site and downloaded the Ubuntu folder. I put this folder into the cd on my laptop but the system didn't recognize it. Do I need to do something other than download the .iso file?

linus72 06-17-2010 09:03 PM

Linus72,
Hey I got the FluxOS Ubuntu on a CD and loaded it. It seems to work fine, but I want to load it onto my Hard drive instead of using the live CD. Any option for that? Someone told me to go to Systems / Install, but there's no option for that.
