Unhappy Argh, can't boot!

I have a 512 usb stick that I want to use as a rescue stick for *any* computer, but also specifically my laptop. I've done a bit of research and feather seem like it is most suited to what I need. This laptop btw, has no floppy drive and no option in the bios for USB sticks.

I tried to install feather as the website howto told me. I unziped feather to the USB drive and then ran syslinux /dev/sda1. That did not result in a bootable stick so I downloaded mbr, ran install-mbr /dev/sda, and then repeated the installation method for feather. Still no luck

Any ideas what to do? And I'm not set on using feather. I'm fine using another distro if it means it'll work, however feather is my number 1 choice.

Any ideas as to what else I could try?

Thanks,
Corey
