Xwindow XF86config...

Ok this is my ? I just got done installing Debian sarge. I did a FTP install. Well Xwindows is not coming up at all. I did xf86cfg -textmode to configure it. I did the mouse and keybored thing and videocard, monitor thing. I have a nvidia 6800gt pci express videocard and a viewsonic graphics series G71f+ monitor 17inch. Since debian didnt have the 6800gt chipset and only had 5950ultra i picked that. Driver was the NV driver for nvidia. Monitor well I got no clue for horizontal sync and vertical sync. Screen resolution well I picked 800X 600, 1024X768, 1152 X 864, 1280 X 1024. The Hz thing well i got no clue what that does and bit i pick 24bit. Well I go to write it and I get like cant write to /xct/X11/XF86config. Well then I thought oo I may need to be root and did it as root and it saved. Well I went and typed startx and it didnt work. I always keep on getting this error saying "fatal error can not find screen". ?????????? Please help me. I really want to use debian. Please help me!!!

First things first. NV is the distributed (read: Crappy) driver. Get the real (although non open source) Nvidia driver. You can probably just do apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-settings.

If that doesn't work go to the Nvidia site and download the driver. Then do
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Then work from there, with the right driver in place.

If you have a burner burn it to cd, or use a thumbdrive if you have one.

If you did an ftp install I assume you have Internet access, download it on your linux side.

Did you actually read the manual on the NVidia web-site? It might be helpful to post the actuall error message.

It is probably that the nvidia dirver needs the kernel headers. To install them:
Code:
apt-get install kernel-headers-`uname -r`
