Xwindow problem
Hello,
I have installed Debian recently on my PC. It's the latest Woody version. I also have installed KDM, KDE, KDEbase and I have configured xfree86. But when I use startx, it says "no screens found". What can I do to this? I have an nvidia graphics card, and I have tried the vesa and nv driver both... |
post some of your X logs (look in /var/log and --debian gurus?-- other places) for a start. Also, make sure that the [hv]sync rates are correctly set.
|
Well, if I want to post some of those logs, I have to write everything down, and type it again here ;)
The main thing it says is: "no screens found" Also the [hv]sync is set correctly I think, I just chose the defaults... |
check with the technical specs for your monitor. The defaults won't always work--this isn't windows :p
|
Well, it has already worked before with the defaults, so that shouldn't be a problem... Anyone else?
|
Well, I changed something in the xf86config file, and the "no screens found" error has disappeared, but there's a new one: "Module load failure". What can be the problem here, and how can I solve this?

Read the Debian Configuration sticky at the top fof the page.

Middelemiel - the article macondo speaks of has some excellent info on getting your x-window system up and running, required reading one could say. |
Okay, the problem seems to be fixed now on my normal pc.
I've tried to configure X-window on my laptop. This one's pretty old, 233 mhz, 32 mb RAM, 2 mb video card... It's a Toshiba Satellite 4000 series I did read the article mentioned above, and at the xserver configuring part there was nothing new for me. I still get an error called "module load failure" now. I think that's because I couldn't find the horizsync of my monitor. I know that it can run with 800x600 and 85 hz (it seemed pretty much to me, but some information on the internet of the official toshiba site said that...) So I have configured it all right, except maybe the horiz. sync. How can I find out what this should be? |
