xserver-xconfig

ok, i just installed debian 3.1

it is currently up and running, but there are two problems.

first, i can not set my resolution any higher than 800x600
second, my usb mouse does not work

i have found the both of these problems come from the same place...xf86config

i ran the command dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

once i get into this setup, i have no idea what to put where and what to select.

any help would be great

ps- my video card is a geforce4 420 go and my mouse is a logitech optical

You may have the wrong monitor refresh rates, that would limit what resolutions you can set. Search for the specs of your monitor and change them accordingly.

Do you remember what you changed that did it?

Always, always back up config files before changing them.

# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.old (to back up)
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config.old /etc/X11/XF86Config ( to restore )

Try another dpkg-reconfigure, or edit the file manually to get x back if you can. Does it say no monitor, or no screens found?

To get a higher resolution choose the resolution you want. Then go into /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and find the resolution part. Then add your chosen resolution to every line. If that doesn't work yet you also have to change it with "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86"

Did you choose easiest mode in the reconfigure to see if you could change it already?
