Xserver not found

I just finished installing Debian (3.1_r0a) from CD for the first time and when starting up GDM I got this error message.

"GDM: Xserver not found: /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0 Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7

please install the Xserver or edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to point to the right place."

I'm still new at this. I chose the defaults as much as possible in the install. There were some package errors that I could see but it only (very quickly) listed the Gnome-meeting package at the end.

What do I do now? Help please, step-by-step if you can. Thanks in advance.

I logged in as root and did a startx to get some more (hopefully useful) error messages. This is what I got.

it created the new authority file ok then

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 2: /usr/bin/X11/X: No such file or directory
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 2: exec: /usr/bin/X11/X: cannot execute: No such file or directory
giving up. <<-- (yeah no kidding)

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno3): Server error.

Have you installed the x-window-system package (apt-get install x-window-system)?

I selected all the categories in the Debian installer "desktop" "internet" "mail" etc. except the last one which was "choose packages manually". Is it on the first CD? I'm installing from CDs, I have the first 5.

I went back into base-config and selected manual package selection. This is the message I'm getting after listing all the packages

"The following packages will be REMOVED:
apache 2-mpm-prefork at bind9 dnsutils exim4 exim4-base exim4-config exim4-daemon-light gnome-desktop-environment gnomemeeting libopenh323-1.15.2 libpt-plugins-oss mailx mutt postgresql postgresql-client pricmail

0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 98 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

So I'm guessing these are the ones with errrors? But nothing about X there.

Well Hell that just about removed everything! Ok I'm in manual package selection and I can see the packages I have installed now. x11 is listed as installed.

Right now I see how this works, under uninstalled there's also an x11 and under "main" I see packages highlighted in green. These are the problem packages?

With those pkgs being removed it's hard to know where your system stands. If you did previously install the desktop envrionments then those deb files are cached on your system and won't need to be downloaded again. So, if it were my box I'd just reinstall the following and then see if you get a GUI login screen.

# apt-get install --reinstall x-window-system gnome kde gdm

Edit: Afterwards, take the time to reconfigure your X system:
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

I'm still getting package error problems, even removing the packages and going back through the install process. I'm giving up, it's not worth it. Even the Slackware installer is better than this.

No wait! Well whatta ya know! In frustration I just dropped out of the Debian installer after getting the package error message again at the end of the install process and just out of spite to see the error messages again I "startx" and... it went straight into Gnome! According to Synaptic I have 3 broken packages but at least I'm in.

What a nightmare of an installer!

LOL. Sure, blame the installer.
