xserver kills network Debian Lenny

I am trying to upgrade a recently repaired Averatec laptop from Etch to Lenny. This is an interim step to see if I can upgrade it to Squeeze. It worked well before the upgrade. The upgrade went OK except I can't have both X and networking, either Ethernet or wireless. If I boot into safe-mode, both eth0 and eth1 work well. Both stop as soon as I type 'startx' or otherwise start the xserver. If I boot directly into X, eth0 doesn't work although DMESG and syslog say it should. Booting into X, the wireless, eth1, won't associate with my access point and the messages say the access point is not responding so the kernel assumes out of range. The output of 'route' is unchanged whether X is running or not. Suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

Sounds like a networkmanager snafu. Check /etc/network/interfaces - that file should not contain entries for eth0 or eth1. If it does comment them out or otherwise delete them.

Thanks for the response. Seemed like a good idea but when I tried to remove network-manager, none of the network-manager packages are installed. I'll study some more.
