xserver connection trouble

I can open Iceweasel by clicking an icon, but typing 'iceweasel' in terminal results in 'Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
firefox-bin:2841): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:'
Same with other apps like for instance Konqueror and kwrite.

I jus installed system by deselecting desktop system and selecting standard system.
I installed KDM, KDE, x-window-system-core and then I issued gui=xserver.

Whats causing the error?

This is not an error. It is by design.

When I am logged into KDE and want to run a GUI program as root, I prefix the command with 'kdesu', e.g.
$ kdesu kate
I also have some handy service menu items for root duties that I got from here.
