xlibs and libxrender problem....

i recently installed fluxbox and really love it. my only problem is that now i can't use apt-get because i had to force the installation of libxrender so that i could install fluxbox. when i try to us apt-get to uninstall xlibs it tells me there are a whole ton of programs that depend on xlibs.

when i try to use 'apt-get -f install', it asks me if i want to unistall fluxbox. not what i want.

so, my question is : can i uninstall xlibs and not run into problems, or is there a way i can get apt-get to cope with the fact that the two packages have a conflict and not complain about it everytime i try to install something?

no clues or anything? the problem is libXrender.so.1

both of the two packages ( xlibs and libxrender ) provide it, but fluxbox depends on the libxrender package.

i guess there is one fix..... since the libxrender installs the libXrender.so.1 to /usr/lib, and xlibs installs libXrender.so.1 to /usr/X11R6/libs

i could uninstall the libxrender package and just have a symlink in /usr/lib to the one in /usr/X11R6/libs.

would fluxbox still work with that setup? i'll check the fluxbox page to see if there's anything there that can help me.

The only clue I can think of is to pore over the man page for apt-get.
I think there's stuff in there like
Code:
apt-get --fix-broken check
and other stuff to force installs/removes to try and fix your problem.
Perhaps the apt-get howto might also be of use.
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap.../index.en.html

Also, maybe a dpkg-reconfigure {package_name} might help out...
Dunno. I'm running icewm myself.

Good luck, and be sure to post if you come up with a satisfactory
solution.
