xfree86 problem

Hello world,
i just installed woody and tried to startx but it gives me an error no screens found.i figured it was because th nv driver i had chosen does not support gforce 4. so i changed it to vesa. still the same. any solutions?
also, I want to know wether there is any way of listing the individual packages on a deb cd.......

Install the nvidia-kernel-src package and see the documentation in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-src/ directory to get started.

I have never used cds, but 'apt-cache policy package' probably shows where the package in question can be located (it does in network case). To find out what packages are in the cd, you can either mount the cdrom and look, or grep the package lists. Something like
Code:
grep '^Packgage:' /var/lib/apt/lists/something_here_binary_i386_Packages

To check what you have installed for X use dpkg -l | grep 4.1, here's what I have installed for X 4.3:
Code:
HappyTux:/home/stephen# dpkg -l | grep 4.3
ii libdps1 4.3.0-0ds4 Display PostScript (DPS) client library
ii libident 0.22-2.2 simple RFC1413 client library - runtime
ii libpcre3 4.3-3 Philip Hazel's Perl 5 Compatible Regular Exp
ii libreadline4 4.3-8 GNU readline and history libraries, run-time
ii libxaw7 4.3.0-0ds4 X Athena widget set library
ii svgalib1 1.4.3-15 Console SVGA display libraries (for libc5)
ii svgalibg1 1.4.3-15 Console SVGA display libraries
ii xbase-clients 4.3.0-0ds4 miscellaneous X clients
ii xfonts-100dpi 4.3.0-0ds4 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-100dpi- 4.3.0-0ds4 100 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 106
ii xfonts-75dpi 4.3.0-0ds4 75 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-75dpi-t 4.3.0-0ds4 75 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 1064
ii xfonts-base 4.3.0-0ds4 standard fonts for X
ii xfonts-base-tr 4.3.0-0ds4 standard fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10
ii xfonts-scalabl 4.3.0-0ds4 scalable fonts for X
ii xfree86-common 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System (XFree86) infrastructure
ii xfs 4.3.0-0ds4 X font server
ii xlibs 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System client libraries
ii xlibs-data 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System client data
ii xlibs-dev 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System client library development f
ii xserver-common 4.3.0-0ds4 files and utilities common to all X servers
ii xserver-xfree8 4.3.0-0ds4 the XFree86 X server
ii xutils 4.3.0-0ds4 X Window System utility programs
I believe you will have to install at least X 4.2 to get support for the newer Nvidia cards or get the new driver from the Nvidia site and compile that. To get X 4.2 for woody go to http://www.apt-get.org and search for xfree86 to get the line you need for the backport for woody to put in your sources.list.
