Unhappy XF86 and Debian 3.0 r2

First of all, Id like to say that Debian has been disappointing me at every turn. The installer kernel froze on me probably 200 times. And I had to keep "pulling the plug" to restart the installation.

I also had to upgrade XF86 to version 4.4 before I could get into xwindows.

But I am not sure if I have a "stuck" key or something but lately the login screen will not respond to keyboard input. Any key I push toggles the screen resolution between the values present in the XF86Config-4 file. I edited the file and only left the 1400x1050 resolution .. but the login screen still doesnt respond to keyboard input.

Is there some kind of key sequence that allows XF86 to toggle between screen resolutions?
