x not starting

Hi
I have debian testing 2.6.15, after installing xserver-xorg and icewm, I am trying to get the x-window to start, #startx gives command not found, #icemw gives X must be running and $DISPLAY set.
x does not start or reboot either
I am not sure what to do.

thanks
