X doesn't start after compiling kernel

hi all, i installed debian woody r3, and went fine. Then i compiled the 2.4.30 kernel first with xconfig from X and then with menuconfig from console-mode adding the support for the net.

After booting with the new kernel, whick seemed to work with no issues, X doesn't start, saying it couldn't find any free socket....

are you aware of any incompatibility between XFree86 4.1.0 and kernel 2.4.30 or I missed some kernel configuration option?

bye!

my card is a ati 3d rage II 215GT PCI, with 8 MB ram.

Some italian forum strongly discourged me to upgrade to a 2.6 kernel, because - they said - my system wouldn't be able to gain big benefits from it.

I have an AMD K6-2 @ 412 MHz, 160 MB of RAM and that video card.

Anyway i think the problem isn't in the driver, because with the old kernel, the 2.2 shipped by default with woody r3, things went great. I'm still able to select it from the lilo prompt at boot-time.

The first kernel i compiled missed the net support, so i compiled it again with it but got the same error message from X (gdm couldn't take my system to the graphical login).

Any suggestion?
