x config with S3 trio integrated [896 chipset fails]

Hello ,

I would R-E-A-L-L-Y apreiciate it if someone could help me with this
I try to install Debian Sarge distro on an IBM PIII 450Mhz,192MB,S3 Trio Integrated onboard VGA.

No matter what I do I can't get the S3 work properly with X.I tried installation a few days ago ,twice.
At the first case .the VESA Xserver was used,at a frustating 640x480.My NEC multisync 75F screen is happily working right now at a second IDENTICAL IBM box using Suse's 9.3 at 1152x864@78 refresh rate.
These 2 systems are usin g the same Screen ,keyb and mouse with a KVM switch.

Questions

1.I used Xf86Config to configure Debian for X.Is ther any Debian specific console tool to configure ?

2.I can't find thje proper server to select from Xf86Config.Suse is reporting the VGA as S3 Virge. When selecting S3 Virge ,and configuring the options, startx reports "no valid clocks found"

Any ideas ????

If you're unsure about the model of your graphics card, do "lspci | grep VGA".

When you install the x-window-system package, the post-installation script should ask you some questions about your hardware. You can rerun the post-installation script afterwards (as root) with "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86".

If you've manually modified /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 , then debian refuses to make any changes to that file (read the text at the beginning of XF86Config-4 for more details).
