working with knoppix, instal HD...

Hi all,
I’m newbie Knopix user,
My pb began when i want to use nessus, I always got : login failed, although I did the right things : starting nessusd then nessus and using root passwd, so thought to reinstall it -nessus- , As I m working From CD and I use VMWARE , I didn't understand how things works,
I downloaded nessus 2.24 in the Windows Partition i.e. C:

My pb is :

-how can i fond the Windows partition, although i did : fdisk -l , I get only one partion sda of 4GB, I know that was made with VMWARE, and I got this message :
/dev/sda doesn't contain a valid partition table .

-how do I mount the HD (ie C , When I looked in the /dev directory I didn’t find any things like hda or sda .....I tired to do :
mount -t ntsf /dev/sda /mnt/wint but I couldn’t

It looks to me that you may have a problem with the installation of one of these programs, or one mau conflicting with the other.

Plus, what the system tells you is right: " /dev/sda doesn't contain a valid partition table " - that is because VMWare, does not uses a partition table like ReiserFS or EXT3, is uses a allocated space in your HD that is recocnized only by the program itself. Thus is not partitioned"!

I have used VMWare on both Linux and PC machines and on both occasions, worked just fine". The good thing about VMWare is that 1st, it does not mess around with partitions ( and probably one of the best things ); so you shouldn't worry about looking for partitions........ What you should do instead is make sure the installation files were correctly installed and that is also properly configured.

I have never used Nessus; I have heard good things about Bochs though, try that"!

To find out exactly what pertitions id the windows partition, type ( as root ) the command: mount; that will display all the mounting point availlable on your box.

Now to try and find the windows partition you have to have the modules that are compatible with NTFS Read-Write partitions; then you need to create a directory ( for example called "/home/user/win" ) and then mount the partition to retrieve the downloaded file; by typing the following command:

mount -t ntfs /dev/hda - and the partition number that corresponds to Windows - usually would be hda5 or 6. So that the complete command would be something like:

mount -t ntfs /dev/hda5 /home/user/win.

Ok, so try these things first to eliminate possibilities and then, tell us how it went"!

May the Tux be with you"!
