Woody & GeForce4 Mx 440

Yes, it's again the NVidia pb !
I don't want to use Sarge or Sid as for now and just want to upgrade the needed parts and leave the rest (the stable part aka Woody) alone.

- I installed Woody kernel 2.2.20 (default)
- upgraded to 2.4.21
- d/loaded Nvidia-*1-0.4363.run

It needs glic2.3.2 and XFRee86-4.3.0

-d/loaded both of them and upgraded all necessary stuff eg gcc and binutils
-compiled glibc (many warnings but no fatal error)

UNFORTUNATELY, it fails at make check and make install.

Any neat way to set up all this ?

Why don t you use the nvidia packages of debian?
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-src nvidia-glx-src ,compile all the debian way with make-kpkg kernel_image modules_image (you need the kernel-package for it) I did it this way and it worked always fine.

Hi Snu,

The main reason was I wasn't sure if the Debian packages are the most uptodate for the NVidia GPU and the NVid*****.run is the file NVidia themselves provide on their site.

Of course, it'll come back to waht u say if I can't find soon the solution to the glibc2.3.2 pb.

I thought about it again, and think it is included in the packages. When you make-kpkg modules_image debian uses wget to downloaded some files from the nvidia server. so in my oppinion, they are the newest drivers. Correct me if i was wrong

No network either

Unfortunately, I have other pbs with DHCP with my cable modem. So, I can't make any wget for now and just d/load and burn packages as needed :((

Hmpf. You wrote it fails at make check and make install.
I used it too and didn t make check and install. Ok it did it automaticly I think by running the installer. Didn t you do
sh NVI...er.run ?
You compiled a new kernel. I hab it once that the Nvidia driver didn t compile because the gcc version wasn t the one of the kernel, but if you compiled the kernel with the same there shouldn t be a problem.
What about modules you compiled in the kernel or as modules? I had once alsa problems because I had a specific sound card kompiled in the kernel.

Ok, the make check and make install pb was for the glibc23..

Actually, make check failed and make install was ok ( apart a lot of warnings).
But at that stage, my pb was how to get the new installed glibc23 to be my primary libc ...... Broke my Woody in the process as I wrongly tried to delete /lib/libc.so.6 and link it back again against libc-2.3.2 in /usr/local/.....

I went through all this mainly because I had burned the XFree4.3.0 binaries for glibc23 (remember ? I didn't have a working Net access at that time so I couldn't d/load the good XFree4.3.0 again which sh Xinstall -check said was glibc22 but it was too late then).

Eventually, I got my dhcp working (using dhcp3-client).

Put some unstable source for apt and dist-upgraded a little bit (from a bare Woody install with no X, just kernel-upgraded to 2.4.21 with gcc-2.95).

Just an APT-miracle : I now have gcc-3.3, and more important, a primary libc set to glibc23.

Next step is to set up XFree4.3.0 then and make a sh Nvidxxxxx.run afterwards. I'll do it this night and tell u about it.

As for NVidia, I think Nvidxxx.run superseded the combination Nvid-kernel + NVid-GLX but I'm not quite sure. That's why I told you that apt-installing those 2 wouldn't give you the last Nvid drivers ....

snu 07-16-2003 10:36 AM

apt-instaling will give you the newest driver. I am sure. They downloaded from the nvidia server. and why should nvidia take old driver?
ans the sh Nvidia....run installes the kernel src and the glx. It is very easy with it. just sh nvidia...run and after that modprobe nvidia
You have to write nvidia in your moduler or modules autoload or whtever it s name and everything works fine
