Why is there no sticky thread with debian install guide?

Maybe a stupid question, but everyone knows (right?) that Debian is a pain in the ass to install. Which installer to choose? standard iso's? all the different iso's like sarge installers and stuff.

Why is there no sticky thread about installing debian?

Currently i am using slackware.. but lately i've been thinking about trying/ or even moving to Debian. but i tried debian in the past (recently with woody) but it was a hell to install. Well, maybe i shouldn't be so affraid anymore, since i moved to linux for over a year now. But still. even the debian website doesn't have an easy overview. (at least not for newbies)

There is a very good installlation guide with every Woody CD. If you haven't seen it and want to look at it on the net then you'll find it here . The key to installing Debian successfully is knowing what your hardware is. You should get all the specs of the hardware you are using before you start. You can also use Knoppix to identify the stuff for you. The real hard part comes after the initial install because that's when you meet apt. I personally worked my way through dselect but most people don't like it and can never get to grips with it.

Actaully, Debian was the first distro that I got installed properly, as the install guide was clear, concise, and to the point. It covered most scenerios and walked you through the install from beginning to end. I later found Gentoo and they do a great job as well.

The most important thing about installing an OS is to know your hardware.

there is documentation on the website of the distro and there is google for the ones you know how to use it...

The new installer (as said many times) is nothing like the old one. It's easy robust and does the job. All things needed to know to install debian are also needed installing any other distro. So, go ahead download the new installer and give it a shot. You'll see it's really not hard to get a nice running true Debian system!

Actually, you need to know less. If your computer gets online with DHCP, you'll likely only have to choose your language and wait 20 minutes! :D

Well, i am using the netinstaller right now. it still has to download about 600 mb or so. at least after the base was installed, it rebooted.

So, so far it looks pretty easy ;)

still a lot of work to do i guess.. for now just waiting ;)

Deb's good stuff. I have been playing with DFS. It takes the netinstaller a bit farther. Its not quite the "Gentoo-like" install I expected, but its not too far off (Gentoo's got a prettier framebuffer install.LOL)

Don't foget that Debian isn't very hard to install if you know just a little about linux. That could be why also.
