Why am I banned from Libera.chat?

I used to have an account at freenode. I tried to connect today, fully unaware of its implosion earlier this year. I found out about it and created a brand new account on Libera.chat. I registered my nick with password and email confirmation. Then I joined the #debian channel. As soon as I got in, the Topic banner posted:

You have been kicked by debchange: (You are banned from this channel)

What happened? How did I get banned so fast? Is it restricted now?

Thread title is misleading. You have been banned from one channel, not all of libera.chat.

If it happened before you even posted anything it might be IP related. How were you connecting to that channel?

These things happen. I have twice been banned from the LQ wiki as a "known spammer". On most occasions however I can log in without problems. It seems to depend on what IP address your ISP gives you.

I popped into the channel and asked, and was told this is because you are trying to connect to IRC using the root account on your machine:

Quote:
11:12 < jelly> LucMove in particular was banned because we don't allow to irc
from root account (for various mostly, but not completely,
historical reasons)
11:13 < PMT> Is there a historical reason that the ban message doesn't mention
that fact, and just says "you're banned, get out"?
11:17 < jelly> that looks more like a misconfig
