Which one is newer?


Which is newer, Debian Sid or Debian Sarge, sorry im totally puzzled! (n00b)

I think sid is unstable and sarge is testing. Packages are put in Sid before being moved to sarge. Read more about why debian has several distros at the same time, here.

sid is considered bleeding edge, however if something is broken, it's broken in sid first. I use Sarge, because that way it's gone through some degree of testing without being outdated.

There's also experimental. That's even newer but with more bugs I guess. And I noticed sometimes some packages aren't in there.

How exactly do you know if you are running Sarge or Sid? I believe that I am running Sarge, did a network install with RC2.

most likely you are running sarge. Check your /etc/apt.source list. If anywhere in there is says 'testing' or sarge it's sarge. If it says 'unstable' or sid then it's sid.
