You may need to install X first. Try:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install x-window-system
apt-get install kde

The situation you describe looks like a bug in the installer I encountered some months ago - maybe you have an older version of the netinst installer? - this bug should have been fixed by now.
Here is a thread I opened regarding this bug: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=250515

Anyway the actions above have fixed it for me, and actually I think it's best doing it that way = making a base install and then installing applications one by one according to one's needs.

Edit:

At This stage I think the network connection and apt sources should have already been configured...

Maybe he made a typo or something during the network configuration. Anyway, whatever carlwill tries to install he only gets error messages from apt. IMO, this indicates that either network connection is not up or apt sources haven't yet been configured.

Notice that carlwill wrote:

No matter what I picked, it says it had errors downloading stuff and it then gave me the option to just complete the install, which I did.

Now my install is complete and I installed nothing except a base system. How can I fix this? I am at a non-gui login & have no clue what to do now? It seems that I installed a base core version of Debian and have nothing else.
