Where to save compiled NIC driver in the debian netinst-CD image?

Hi.

I was going to install Debian with the netinst CD on a PC recently, although that CD didn't have any Ethernet driver for my NIC, so I downloaded one that should work with my NIC from here: http://javier.rodriguez.org.mx/index...ver-for-debian (Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet driver for Debian).

Now I'd like to get this driver (atl1.ko) in the drivers-list that appears on the installation screen, so I thought I'd just write the driver to the installation-CD and reburn it. But, the question is, where do I place the driver in the CD so it will appear in the available drivers-list?

P.s. I tried to save the driver on a USB-drive, though when attempting to mount it I got a errormsg like "no such device" or so, but there was a device. both a device in /dev (/dev/sdb5, the USB) and a target "device"/folder, so I don't know why this errormsg appeared. Anywho, that's why I'm trying to burn the driver to the CD.

Perhaps someone has a better method, mounting a device and copy the driver from there don't work as I already wrote (or maybe it does, but I can't figure out how anyway).

Hope anyone know how to tackle this problem.

If it were me i would throw in a supported card for the install and pull it when it's done. That procedure looks pretty long and complicated to do for a single install imho.

Thanks for the answer farslayer. I will take a close look at that right on.

I would too throw in a supported card if I had one available, but unfortunatly I don't.

As for long and complicating procedure, I agree, it indeed is. Using another device to copy the driver didn't work cause I/something failed during mounting the device.

Thanks for your reply c4bo, though I don't really follow. What's "the brown one"?

The netinst-CD doesn't include a driver for my NIC, but maybe the CD @ 650 MB data or the DVD @ 4,4 GB data includes them? The netinst CD I was using was burnt about more then a year ago. Does anyone have a clue about this? Cause if this is the case, I might just burn a CD with the stable release @ 650 MB or the DVD @ 4,4 GB.

Edit: found some stuff through google that indicates that the kernels >= version 2.6.21 should have the driver available, so I'm going to try burning the latest debian installation CD, and tomorrow I'll write whether it worked or not.

That is the method I used to install Debian on my Netbook.. I had to use the Lenny Daily Build to get the network interface to work.. worked like a charm though.. did the netinstall booting from a USB flash drive.. Nice
