where is the xorg file, in /etc/X11 it is empty

Hi,
my debian doesn't detect the video card but ubuntu live ( and other live like linuxMint Mepis..) , I want to copy the file xorg.conf from ubuntu live to the installed debian, problem ther is no xorg.conf or it is empty, it seems that new version of xorg detects video card on fly, and doesn't need to store it in file???!!!

So where can I find the correct xorg to copy it to my debian.

Thanks a lot
bela

Yes, a lot of the detection is done automatically now.

You can generate a rudimentary xorg.conf using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" if there are just a few things you want to add, or you can create one using "Xorg -configure".

Your Xorg.0.log after booting from the other distro might be useful if you need to know what they detected.

Did not know about this and it horrifies me. Get hold of an earlier version of Ubuntu so you can rip off its files.

Thanks for help,
but my question is precise, please if you know give me where the file is stored!!!

dpkg-reconfigure, I know it, it regenerates the same configuration as previous, since the card is not detected correctly firstly, it will always detected as before.

For this reason I want to use an live cd, ubuntu for example, and copy the file to the debian partition.

thanks a lot
best regards
bela

You can do this if you want to. Just put it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
X on Debian will read it if it is there.

I suspect you may have problems, since the xorg.conf you copy from mint/ubuntu may tell the Debian X to load a driver that it does not have.

It isn't stored anywhere, so if you want to create one under Ubuntu, use 'X -configure' from a root terminal, and copy the file that this creates (typically xorg.conf.new in the current directory) to your debian installation (which, as evo2 points out, may or may not solve your problem).
