where has my sound gone to?

I just finished upgrading my etch box to lenny and so far no complaints. pretty smooth installation. the only thing that i haven't been able to get to work is sound.

Code:
# grep snd /proc/modules
snd_seq_dummy 2660 0 - Live 0xf8963000
snd_seq_oss 24992 0 - Live 0xf89a4000
snd_seq_midi 5728 0 - Live 0xf8990000
snd_rawmidi 18496 1 snd_seq_midi, Live 0xf89ac000
snd_seq_midi_event 6432 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi, Live 0xf896b000
snd_seq 41456 6 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event, Live 0xf8a02000
snd_seq_device 6380 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq, Live 0xf8968000
snd_pcm_oss 32800 0 - Live 0xf89f8000
snd_mixer_oss 12320 1 snd_pcm_oss, Live 0xf8996000
snd_hda_intel 324248 1 - Live 0xf8a7f000
snd_pcm 62596 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel, Live 0xf8a1a000
snd_timer 17800 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm, Live 0xf899e000
snd 45604 11 snd_seq_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_timer, Live 0xf89c2000
soundcore 6368 1 snd, Live 0xf8965000
snd_page_alloc 7816 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm, Live 0xf8922000
alsaconf identifies the card as

hda-intel Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller

which is correct. I also check alsamixer to make sure that the sound wasn't muted or all the way down. I also checked that I'm a member of the audio group.

Any help will be appreciated.

Have you also unmuted and raised the volume on the "Front" channel? I've had to do that.
