Another useful option would be to install synaptics, it's a nice and powerful graphical frontend to apt where you can search for stuff from a handy text widget.

Also, I think it's "Synaptic" not "Synaptics"

Finally, KPackage is already there in KDE ("make-kpkg" does indicate you're using KDE, doesn't it? :)). I think it's easier on the eyes than Synaptic.

Nope, the -k- in kpkg has nothing to do with KDE, it's meant to mean kernel package, same as the klogd or the kswapd are related to the kernel and not to KDE:
Package: kernel-package (8.135)

Nice stuff anyway and the other source debianization tools like bebuild and friends are also quite useful.
