Where's menuconfig, gconfig and xconfig?

Hi All,

Trying my hand at building a new kernel. I'd like to use one of the tools that edits the .config file but cannot find utilities such as xconfig, gconfig or menuconfig on my system. This is a new installation of "testing." I was also surprised to find that gcc was not installed by default. I had to install it myself. As I'm new to Debian, all help is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

ab

dunno about menuconfig, "make xconfig" will launch qconf if you have the package libqt3-mt-dev. Might have been a package apt pulled down when I asked for libqt3-mt-dev, I'm not positive.

My wild guesses as to menuconfig and gconfig are this: install libncurses5-dev for menuconfig, and libgtk2.0-dev for gconfig. Like I said though - wild guesses based on experiences with qconf, I've never used gconfig or menuconfig and only mention these as per what I would look at first if I wanted to use one of them.

edit: maybe start with "build-essential" though.

To run such a command, you have to be in a console, as user, in the kernel source directory. 'make xconfig' or 'make gconfig' gives a graphical interface, 'make menuconfig' an ncurses based interface. For the former two you have to work, you have to run a window manager (GNOME/KDE or the like), the latter can be run in the console.

Thanks for the help guys. I had problems with xconfig and gconfig but menuconfig works just fine.

Cheers,
