I think thats a cover-up to cover the real meaning behind it. I saw a european language (non-english) that has the word debian in it. I dont think they are talking about debian linux. I just feel just there could some word in spanish or french or romanian or something with debian & has some meaning to it.
Fact of Life:
Most programmers go with the easiest name to come up with possible.
In different words: They aren't likely to go study 213451 different languages to find the one word they want to use for the name. If someone gives them a name from another lang, they might use it, but most of the time is is whatever comes into their head first that sounds good.
No, seriously, that is the real reason. Deb & Ian. Same as Xine is a shortened version of Maxine.
Yes - it is true - I was - years ago - starting with Debian as my first distribution.
I also wanted to know this, and - at least back then - they even had this info on their website somewhere.
And for what it's worth: I can't make any connection to a similar or even the same word I ever heard in any language... - it is Deb & Ian - Ian being the one who started Debian.

Well I guess Ian spent some time developing Debian. I guess he 'had' to do something for his wife too, or otherwise....
