what compile programs to install?

hi
i run a debian sid 2.6.7, feelin too reliant on apt-get, think to compile some things myself
bein a newb, i was wondering which package i should apt-get so i can make and install files?

more clear, due to dependency, is there one (or few) program i can apt-get and i'll be able to get the essential programs needed? thanks!

ps. and this is a seperate question: which program(s) should i apt-get to get the files needed to compile my own kernel?

thanks a bunch!

What's with all the "apt-get" thing??? If you want to build something from source, download it and build it yourself like

./configure
make
su make install

you are not getting me

in order to do ./configure, make, make install

i need certain programs, like the make program, and gcc i'd imagine, and maybe others, and i'd like to get those programs that allow me to compile myself by apt-getting something, and i was asking if there's one or few programs that i can apt-get so i actually can compile the sources

thanks

I think gcc is enough...

Have you tried compiling anything (with ./configure, make, make-install)?

Are you getting any errors?

I have gcc installed and i get this error everytime I do ./configure

configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See `config.log' for more details.

yea, i apt-got gcc, along with it came binutils, gcc, gcc3.3, and i also have make, and i can't compile the xmms-wma files for my life.
maybe the source code is crappy
but anyhoo, thanks for the reply

I don't think its the code, it happens with any program I try to compile, there must be something we're missing

probably kernel-headers.
