Yes, you are correct about that. Iceweasel had a 64bit version long before Firefox.
You can get a 64bit version of Firefox from Mozilla here.

There are builds of 64 bit Firefox for Linux. I use the nightly build so I don't know how recent the 64 bit normal builds are but they're out there.
