weird kernel panic message

hello everybody
I wanted to install debian lenny on my computer, but when I try to boot the installer, it gives me a strange message and everything jams. The message is: "kernel panic - not syncing IO-APIC + timer doesn't work try using the "noapic" kernel parameter". What does that means? Is that a common issue?
Thanks in advance

APIC stands for " Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controllers" which is used in SMP (Symetric Multiprocessor)systems. It can cause problem with various Linux distributions.

You can find more details about APIC at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance...upt_Controller

The problem can be solved by passing "noapic nolapic" parameter to the linux kernel during booting.

thank you very much milindlokde, I'll try that as soon as I can. In any case I wonder why debian gives me that error message, as I succesfully installed ubuntu and tried some other live distributions...
Bye
