Is it recommended to install webmin for desktop (new) user ?
Why can't I find it in the package list of synaptic ?
Is there a better (usermin ?) package ?

i don't think debian includes webmin anymore for some reason. you could always install it yourself, or install it from stable.

Webmin has been removed from Debian testing and unstable repositories because it's buggy and was not well supported. It will not be included when Etch becomes stable.

Some people swear by it. My experience, using it in a class on a Redhat system was that it's buggy and not well supported.

i agree, i hated that thing. i didn't "trust" it, either. i thought it was always more trouble than just doing everything from the command line.

I use webmin all the time on all linux systems that i build, mainly cause i have been stuck in the windows world for so long, have found it to be a very useful point and click tool for beginers. Providing you download the debian file from the webmin site, i have found that there are very few bugs, on the odd occasion i have had to change the module configs to point to the right folders, but it has never screwed up a system or caused any problems. I also run various levels of debian ie stable unstable and testing and not had any problems wichever way i go.

Worse comes to worse, install it, try it, and if you dont like, the uninstaller packaged seems to work well too.

Just installed it through their web site , looks ok didn't play with it yet.I install their zip file not the deb file .
A dumb question :
1. How can I remove this package in the future , I do not see it in Synaptic ?
2. if I wanted to install the package.deb file , how should I have done it ?

giraf, i think the uninstaller (the script) is placed with the config files in /etc/webmin, i guess .

According to the destructions /etc/webmin/uninstall.sh should do the trick.
