Webcam recording audio skips

I have posted a few times about issues with my webcam. I have solved them with help from everyone here on LinuxQuestions, so I am coming here again with this question:

I would like to record video using my webcam. I have a Logitech Orbit Sphere A/F. It runs pretty well when I use it for Skype. However, when I attempt to use it to record video, I run into problems.

The audio skips on the recording. The video will be all right, but the audio playback sync for about a 1.5 seconds, then skip to three or four seconds ahead, play normally for another second or two, skip ahead another two or three seconds, play normally and then the audio will end.

So, for example, I recorded myself counting from one to 20 slowly. The video will last roughly 21 or 22 seconds. The audio will be in sync with me saying "1, 2,...," it'll cut to, "...4, 5,..." it'll cut again to "... 9, 10, 11..." then it'll cut out again and this time not come back. Meanwhile the video proceeds normally for the 20 or 22 seconds.

This happens regardless of the .avi format, MJPG compressed, YUY2 uncompressed YUV or RGB uncompressed BMP.

I'm using Debian Sid with the 2.6.28-1-amd64 kernel. I've got 1 GB of RAM, and an Athlon AMD64 3200+. I am using the uvc driver and guvcview camera control from linux-uvc.berlios.de/ - 'Linux UVC driver and tools'.

Any thoughts on why the audio might skip and cut out?

Have you tried other webcam software like cheese? I haven't used it much, but it worked fine for me with a built-in webcam on an Acer notebook.
