vsftp starts on boot ... I don't want it to

I think this is a Debian forum question. Vsftp works like I want it to on FC3, but not Debian. I have it installed just for personal transfers from one machine to another as opposed to a normal ftp server. I only want it running on demand. Vsftp.conf says 'listen = yes', but it starts automatically every time I boot.

I'm new to Debian, and it doesn't recognize the 'service' command I use in FC3, so I can't even figure out how to turn it off apart from killing the process in 'System Monitor.' That seems awfully ugly.

Have looked at 'man vsftp' ... Doesn't help. Anyone know of a short overview doc file for running vsftp on Debian?

Using Sarge ... 2.6.8-386

It may involve with runlevel

if you run in runlevel 3 ( console mode with multiuser)

try to look for vsftp in "/etc/rc3.d/s99local"

Relate graphical tool such as ksysv, sysv etc.

Debian has update-rc.d, I think it's the equivalent to Fedora's service command. Read the man page. You can find documentation for most programs you install from under the directory /usr/share/doc .

There's also invoke-rc.d that does the same thing as "/etc/init.d/service_name start|stop|restart".

There are several Terminal User Interfaces (TUI's) for managing services in Debian, I like sysvconfig.
