vmware 4.51 runs very slow

I have debian testing and have compiled kernels with the pathces
for win4lin. All the kernels I compiled 2.4.22 - 2.6.? has been
working with vmware, but vmware was very slow.
I'm also using vmware 4.51 with mandrake 9.1 kernel 2.4.21,
this kernel runs very good with vmware, but is slower, and
sometime it can swap to death on my PC.
I know one person who had the some problem with
kernel 2.6.? , and another who is using vmware under
debian without problem, but he has an older kernel.
I can not compile older kernels, because my gcc is too new for it
and it finds some mistakes ...
I think that vmware 4.51 is not so old so it must support kernels
2.4.2* ... So what could be the problem?
Any ideas?
