view contents of a deb package

Hi,

I would like to know how can I view the contents of a deb package. Suppose I download the deb package alsa-uitls. How can I see the contents of the package?

Thanks

Use the web site.

For example, go to http://packages.debian.org/stable, click the category that deals with your package of interest (e.g. SOUND).

That will list all the packages that deal with sound.

Click on your package (alsa-utils).

That will show you a web page that has a link (list_of_file) that will show you all the files in that package.

Man dpkg-deb yields dpkg-deb -c file.deb to list the contents.

I tried this out but I'm not actually sure I'm looking at the contents of the package or not... I should download one that isn't installed and see...

Thanks for the reply. On some further searching, I found that mc let;s you see all the data files along with the control file which the --extract option does not allows you to do so.
