Video resolution, etc...

Hello,

I recently reinstalled Debian (long story) and the highest monitor resolution I can get is 800x600. I'm pretty new to Linux, generally speaking, so could someone give me some advice?

I have a lot of questions, but I don't know if I'm supposed to post a new message for each one or not. So, I'll just ask here. Often, I want to listen to streaming .wmv songs. How can I do that? What driver should I d/l?

Thanks,
PlainDave

Generally, you get better faster help if you post a separate thread for each problem, but I'm unsure if it's in the rules. Regardless, it's just a good idea. To watch streaming wmv, you'll need a program called MPlayer, a package called Win32 codecs, and a small plugin to Firefox called the MPlayer Plug-In. Google each of those and you will get an avalanche of information. Actually try tossing them through the search engine here and you'll find loads. The win32 codecs might not be too easy in Debian as I think the license on them is rather encumbered and Debian is a relatively purist distro.

Regarding the screen resolution, what have you tried in order to change it?

All depends on the graphics card you are using and also the kernel. Did you install Etch or Sarge ? with which Kernel?

If you install Etch with 2.6.18 ( I think this is the latest, I may be wrong) most probably your graphic card has been detected. I heard about 915resolutions package for getting non-standard resolution in laptops, are you using a laptop?

Hardik

For streaming media you can use any number of media players, I prefer kplayer which uses mplayer myself.

Here is a nice Howto to get multimedia working:

The only thing I don't like about it is that it uses Totem, which I guess is fine if your using Gnome, personally I have never used Totem or Gnome as I am a KDE nut.

I installed Sarge and then upgraded the kernel last night to 2.6.8. This is all pretty much new to me, but so far, so good.

No, just a desktop with a standard CRT monitor (4:3 ratio). Thanks for the reply and the info.

I prefer KDE, as well. But Gnome has, at least, one feature that I really wish KDE had, and that is the ability to find "Properties" at the bottom of just about any right-click menu. But that's probably for another thread.

Thanks again,
PlainDave
