Video problems after apt-get upgrade

My old computer 933MHz, 256MB Ram with an old Nvidia TNT2 Pro video card is running Debian Lenny.

Today I did a apt-get upgrade and immediately after reboot, I have lost my resolution from 1280X1024 to 800X600.

Another reboot confirmed that Nvidia (the logo can be seen) is loaded during reboot but the resolution is 800 X 600 max.

I revert to the original xorg.conf (without Nvidia) and reboot and can get back the 1280 X 1024 size. But without this old video card working, I cannot get google-earth working :-(

Anyone knows what is happending?

Any advise is appreciated

:-)

Similar thing (even worse!) happened to me after a set of package update which I did hours ago. My problem is that the nvidia driver cannot be loaded anymore. I re-installed it the debian way but there is no hope. I am back to the "nv" module for now and no 3D.

Same Thing Here

I have the same problem, using Lenny and got X server problems after upgrading and rebooting. In my case, the system freezes when it tries to start kdm. I can't ssh into it either. I'm currently using the nvidia driver, which was installed the Debian Way.

I'll try to edit xorg.conf to use 'nv' through Knoppix. I don't remember what the exact upgrade was, but it involved a lot of xorg-related packages.

I had the same issue as lazylogic. For some reason I could only select a couple of resolutions. I opened the nvidia control program (can't remember the name exactly, but it comes with the nvidia driver set) and selected the resolution that i wanted in there. It not only changed it, but it restored my ability to change it using the desktop tools. Kinda wierd, but worked for me.

Help for others (hopefully)
If your upgrade packages upgraded your kernel, you'll need to reinstall the nvidia drivers as they are kernel version specific.

If you upgraded to xorg 7.2, the location of the x modules and other things have changed. You can move the nvidia modules to the new location or set a link.

Hope this helps.

I don't remember what were the updates. It had lots of X related packages. I tried to completely uninstall and reinstall the driver but it didn't help. Xorg says that it cannot load the nvidia module. if I do an
Code:
lsmod | grep nvidia
I can see that it is loaded in the kernel but X cannot load it. BTW, the kernel is not updated anyways.

Whoops!

Turns out this workstation actually has an ATI card! :\ The xorg.conf file lists the vesa driver.

Thought I'd update in case any devs read this and try to fix non-existant bugs with nvidia.

A recent x-server upgrade in Lenny broke the debian-way nvidia drivers. Doesn't help to rebuild them with module-assistant. Our options are to install the newest drivers from Nvidia's site, ignoring the debs, or wait for them to show up in the repos, using nv in the meantime.

Me, I'm waiting for the official debs.

Note that this probably doesn't relate to Lazylogic's problem, because I think using nvidia-legacy drivers for his TNT2 card.

Good question, lots of file and several dealing with xorg is there.
This is a good example of upgrading blindly

Nope, didn't seems to have a kernel update and
synaptic shows xorg 1:7.2-3 is installed, so what next? Is this xorg 7.2?

Do not quite understand "debian-way nvidia drivers". Appreciate if you could explain a little little bit

Lightbulb 'The Debian Way'

By 'debian-way' I mean using the drivers supplied in the Debian repos, and compiling and installing them using the module-assistant. As described here, for example.

Hm Sidux doesn't seem to have this issue, my system runs Debian Sid/sidux and I do d-u daily.

Host/Kernel/OS "craigevil" running Linux 2.6.21.3-slh-up-4 i686 [ sidux-20070111-d:5 ]
CPU Info AMD Duron 64 KB cache flags( sse ) clocked at [ 1800.094 MHz ]
Videocard nVidia NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] X.Org 1.3.0 [ 1280x1024 @75hz ]
Network cards Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet, at port: e400
Processes 88 Memory 292.4/2027.6MB | HDD ATA WD Size 80GB (21%used) | GLX Renderer GeForce FX 5500/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! | GLX Version 2.1.0 NVIDIA 97.55 | Client Shell | Infobash v2.66

sidux has a great script that updates video drivers after any xorg or kernel upgrade.

Just curious but why is Stable getting updates that break things? Thought the whole point of stable was things like that didn't happen.

I'm running lenny (which ain't stable) and had problems reinstalling the nvidia driver (v100.14.03) after a d-u today, too.

Per dpkg-log, here's what got updated, xorg-wise:

(drivers)
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-6
xserver-xorg-video-apm 1:1.1.1-7
xserver-xorg-video-ark 1:0.6.0-6
xserver-xorg-video-i128 1:1.2.1-2
xserver-xorg-video-newport 1:0.2.1-2
xserver-xorg-video-nsc 1:2.8.2-2
xserver-xorg-video-rendition 1:4.1.3.dfsg.1-2
xserver-xorg-video-s3 1:0.5.0-2
xserver-xorg-video-savage 1:2.1.2-5
xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion 1:1.5.1-1
xserver-xorg-video-sis 1:0.9.3-2
xserver-xorg-video-tseng 1:1.1.1-1
xserver-xorg-video-via 1:0.2.2-2
xserver-xorg-video-voodoo 1:1.1.1-2
xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.2-3
xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:1.1.5-2
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 0.14.7~git20070517-2
xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.2-3

(core)
xserver-xorg 1:7.2-3
xorg 1:7.2-3
x-window-system 1:7.2-3
x-window-system-core 1:7.2-3

What was especially weird about the nvidia installer is that it kept spitting out error messages like this:
Code:
ERROR: Unable to create
       '/usr/lib/dosemu/drive_z/tmp/selfgz3743/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.03-pkg1/
usr/lib/libGL.so.100.14.03' for copying (No such file or directory)
WARNING: Unable to restore file
         '/usr/lib/dosemu/drive_z/tmp/selfgz3743/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.03-pkg
         1/usr/lib/libGL.so.100.14.03'.
That was both before and after purging dosemu. I was tempted to just create that @%^#$ directory, but after purging dosemu, it did install the driver.

Ah, fun times.

Wow a little comforting I am not the only one with this.

found this post on debian forums

Code:
deb http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel/ trunk main
to your sources.list and install the most recent 2.6.22 kernel. I am using 2.6.22r3 without any major problems. You will find more details about the apt-key, etc. here

The second bug may be related to the latest version of module-init-tools/3.3-pre11-1 where the modules are not built properly (see here). I downgraded to 3.3-pre4-2 to get it to work.

The only problem I currently have with kernel 2.6.22r3 is that it is too new to have a patch for VMWare.

Hope this helps.
Not sure If I really want to upgrade to that kernel, I might just be patience and use as is until a fix hits testing, but thought this may help someone thats keen. here's the keys also from http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=15667

I've did the unthinkable out of curiousity.

I've reinstall Debian over the previous install. Did a apt-get update THEN install the Nvidia module downloaded from Nvidia's website. Nvidia works!!!

This means that the update breaks Nvidia that is install BEFORE the update but
will NOT break Nvidia that is install AFTER the update.

I have a similar issue (well maybe not)..

I've been running stable, stabbly using the nvidia-glx xorg driver on 2.6.22.1. I've just done a dist-upgrade to lenny, and now my xorg doesn't recognize my nvidia xorg drivers. It says:

(II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia

even though the nvidia-glx package is installed, and I have /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o file??

I've rebuild my nvidia kernel modules & still nothing..

And i also noted that lenny doesn't have a nvidia-glx package, so I'm assuming its still using the etch versions??

is there something weird with testing a nvidia graphics drivers??
