Using Xorg for the first time

I installed the base minimal system of Debian Etch. Then I installed KDE and the XORG Server, but I can not get KDE to appear. I did use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. What other things do I need to configure for it to work? Thanks.

What errors are you getting when you try to start kde? You can try dpkg-reconfigure kdm to see if you just need to setup the login screen.

Ok, ill try that.

I am not getting any errors. I hit ctrl-alt-f7 to change to xserver screen, but it is just a flashing underscore in the top left corner.

Ok, I installed XDM, but when it starts, the screen flashes black several times, then just goes to the shell login. I can't seem to get it to start.

Can you look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Are there any errors?

Ok I downloaded GDM. When the XServer starts it comes up saying that is couldn't start and to view something to determine the error. It says it couldn't find my video card (I have a GeForce 5500 PCI). How can I find out the correct BusID? I know what driver to use. Thanks.

Yes! I got it to work with GDM! I still cannot get XDM to work though, which is what I was wanting to use. Beggers can't be choosers I suppose.
