using KDM spoils all fonts

Hi,
I am using X.org 6.8.2 + KDE 3.4.0 on sid (this problem occured with Xfree86 also) and when ever I install KDM and reboot the fonts bet messed up like they have been shrunk to 50% of their size. The sizes are the same in Kontrol and even increasing them doesnt take care of the ugliness. I am guessing its because of some conflict between xdm and kdm because I was running xdm before and everything was working. Any suggestions on what I should do?
Thanks

Do you mean the kdm fonts get messed up or those of the entire kde desktop.

I had the same problem (it seems...). When I used kdm the KDE applications fonts were tiny, while when using "startx", font size was normal.

I (didn't) solve this by switching to Gnome, which I've learned to like better than KDE...

Can you post how you fixed it so that others will know the solution if they experience the same problem.

I'd be happy to. Turns out that KDM changes the dpi settings which were used by XDM. This is why an 8pt font doesnt look the same on Mac and windows as Mac uses 72 dpi and windows uses 96dpi. What KDM does is it uses 75dpi as its default whereas XDM uses 100dpi. So there are two options for you.
1. Increase the font point size (very easy just use control center). 8pt in 100pi looks like 11pt in 75dpi
2. Change the dpi settings. Since I am more used to the windows convention I decided to change the dpi settings. Just create a file called Xservers (if its not already there) in/etc/kde3/kdm and add/edit this line
Code:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X vt7 -dpi 96 -nolisten tcp
You can change 96 to any value. 100 if you liked the XDM fonts. 96 if you are used to windows and 72 if you are a Mac user.
Regards
Ali
