Using Etch. Did make-kpkg to create kernel_image

I created a kernel_image with make-kpkg and I get a Kernel Panic: Cannot mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

At what point does the error occur?

What kernel were you using before and which one did you build?

Could we see: 1) output of "dpkg -i" for the install, 2) contents of menu.lst, and 3) "ls /boot" in code blocks? Also, where did you get, or how did you make, the .config file?

Did you compile the disk drivers into the kernel or did you also make an initrd?

if this is happening during the boot process and not at the grub stage, I wonder if the issue is not related to 2.6.18 referencing PATA drives as /dev/hdx and 2.6.24 referencing PATA as /dev/sdx?
