upgrading sysvinit

Does anyone know the proper way to upgrade sysvinit using apt? Since sysvinit depends on such basic components, how do you safely upgrade?

In particular, I am interested in learning how to replace the custom sysninit that comes with Knoppix with the standard sysvinit in the Debian repsoitory.

I read a similar post in a different forum and it got me wondering how to completely transform my Knoppix HD install into Debian unstable.

If you do play with aptitude, purge old packages+ install new ones and you don't have to explicitly force anything strange, upgrading should not be any harder than with other packages.I have done it successfully a few times.
