Smile upgrading my debian 3.1 OS

Dear Folks I'm hoping you will be able to point me at a way of doing this:

My debian 3.1 i386 os which I use as a workstation with open office has no brodband or dialup connection.

I am about to acquire Broadband which has just become available in my area. I wanted to know what is my best plan for updating my (nearly 2 yr old) system. Are there any tutorials which might help me?

Should I install and configure the BB connection 1st and then update? Appreciate any advice/ pointers

thanks
greeb

I would get the broadband up and then do the upgrade. Here's the draft for the release notes to Etch (Testing right now, but 4.0 stable release shortly). It has some hints to making a successful upgrade.

Make sure when you edit your sources you use "etch" instead of "stable" since Etch is not yet stable...

I'm sure the istructions referred to above, make this clear, but get a good backup of your data first. The upgrade from Sarge to Etch should go smoothly, but the conversion from XFree to Xorg still sometimes throws a curve or two. If it was me, I'd do a fresh install of Etch rather than an upgrade, but as I said, that probably is not necessary.
