Upgrading certain package in an old debian installation

Hi, I'm currently still using woody on some of my server, for some reason I haven't do the upgrade to sarge or etch yet.

Currently the version of vim in that woody server is 6.1.018, and the stable version in etch now is 7.0

I am wondering is that possible I upgrade only this vim to version 7.0, without doing a whole server upgrade to etch? It means, do I able to upgrade only certain application to the latest version, in an old woody box ? If yes, how to do it ?

The current debian version is 2.4.25

Thanks for any input.

You are strongly recommended to upgrade your server(s) to Etch on the shortest possible schedule. Woody is no longer supported and given the fact you're still on Woody you haven't updated your system(s) in a long time, leaving securityholes wide open. I can not emphasize the urgency enough to upgrade your system to Etch today!

Because the upgrade automatically gives you the required package... I'm not particularly impressed with your rather lacks attitude regarding security. Any responsible sys-admin would have implemented updates and upgrades on a regular basis. The fact you're still on Woody shows us (at least me) that you don't take security very serious and your remark on knowing about the urgency to upgrade doesn't help improve your standings either.

Now, it could entirely be possible that your server is co-hosted or some other arrangement that doesn't give you full control over the machine. In that case, urge the owner to upgrade a.s.a.p.

oh my god...you still don't get it. I KNOW the urgency here. We are not debating that over here. I am asking a question on using different version of package from the one in the debian repository. It doesn't always means woody. That's only an example. It could be I'm using etch, but I want to install a package let say 'apache' with the latest version that only available in 'lenny'. I don't want to have the whole 'lenny', but only certain package. I know this will end up a mixed package, and it's hardly mentioned in the manual. But I know it's doable. That's what I wish to know how.

If you would like to debate the security mater, you can do it in other thread, please. Hijacking the thread into other topic is not a way in forum, and it will only waste other members time and those who need this information as well. I hope you could at least respect the thread poster here, thanks.

Anybody else know how to do this will be most welcomed to give your opinion, thanks.
