upgrading glibc - libstdc++.5.so

I'm running Debian Woody v3.0r2. Some stuff doesn't run without libstdc++.5.so (eg. Firefox). It doesn't seem to be in Woody, but I found it in Sarge. Is there a good way to upgrade the C libraries across versions? I tried it once, but by the time I finished with the various dependencies (it required upgrading libc6, etc) the system was in an unstable state and I didn't know what to do but reinstall. The apt-get doc contains some info about using packages from different versions on the same system, but I'm not that good with the pkg management system.
